RIVER

2020

salvaged steel, driftwood

3.5' x 21' x 14'

River is created in homage to the Rio Grande. The room-sized installation depicts the sun-lit surface, the dark riverbed below, and the space between. The sculptural structure — which makes simultaneous allusions to massive movement and a quiet, carved space — is made with angle-iron steel salvaged from the jetty-jacks that once kept the river from wandering its flood plain. Driftwood collected from the river’s banks between Abiquiu and Albuquerque defines its gently moving surface. River celebrates the life-giving presence of the Rio Grande in the many generations of animal, plant and human populations that have lived along its course.
